announcement!

Right, so. Here is the deal! I have decided to write a novel. On the internet.

I am, I should point out at this juncture, far from the first person to do this. Allow me to plug Shadow of the Templar, a series of incredible books about a coffee-addicted FBI agent and his favorite wanted criminal; allow me to plug all of Sam Starbuck’s novels, which he puts up in rough-draft format as he’s working on them. The idea of writing a novel online is not particularly, er, novel (read: there is precedent, I’m not crazy). I would also like to point out at this juncture that I am very aware that doing this could prevent me from publishing said novel through traditional means. I am okay with that; the beautiful thing about being a writer? You can always write more :D

I have made some big realizations in the last few years about myself and my writing style and what I like and how I work; most of those realizations can be traced directly to my fandom participation, both as a writer and as an observer of others’ writing processes. So! What I am going to put on the internet is….everything. I’m going to post character sketches and plot outlines; I’m going to post the roughs of each chapter; I’m going to post meta about writing; I’m probably going to post late-night rants about the self-destructive doubting voice that plagues all creative people (except, it would seem, Kanye West, whose self-help book I would buy in a heartbeat). I am going to put it ALL on the internet, start to finish, the whole process, and we’re going to see how it goes. I have pretty much no idea what I’m doing! So, obviously, it’s gonna be great.

Here is what I know so far: the working title of the book is Vigilante. Posts about it will be tagged with that word, until such a time when I get my shit together enough to organize a better option. It’s about a twenty four year old woman who turns out to have superpowers, the kind-hearted, jaded cop she doesn’t mean to fall for, and how the two of them (with the help of her younger brother and probably some other people) get to the bottom of a mystery I haven’t quite worked out yet. YOU NOW KNOW AS MUCH AS I DO, INTERNET. But that’s the secret truth of all original fiction: you pull it out of your ass, more or less. Everybody’s gotta start somewhere.

So: LET US TAKE THIS EXCITING JOURNEY TOGETHER! Or something! Not going to stop writing fanfic, if y’all are worried about that; I don’t think I’ll ever stop writing fanfic, honestly. This is just a new thing; original fiction, in relation to fanfiction, is an and for me, not an or. So once more into the breach, yeah? Yeah. <3
