okay AFTER the fifteen incredibly awkward minutes where derek is like, “i [glare], uh [glare], do you think you could [glare], NOT THAT I NEED YOUR HELP OR ANYTHING [glare], but if you might have some suggestions [glare], about certain things of the romantic variety [glare], WHICH I CERTAINLY WILL NOT BE APPLYING TO ANYONE SPECIFIC AND DON’T ACTUALLY NEED AT ALL [glare glare glare glare]” and steve is like, “i, uh, i might not be the right person to ask, [blush], are you sure you don’t want me to get natasha [blush], i could be really helpful on any number of other topics, have you ever thought about reorganizing your pack’s battle structure into a different formation, that’s probably more important than….than romance [blush]” and they both STARE AT NEARBY WALLS WONDERING HOW TO ESCAPE THIS CONVERSATION
i actually think steve and derek would end up talking about how the only way to have a healthy relationship is to go into it trying not to carry the losses of your past with you. like, i think that’s the romantic advice steve would give ANYONE, because he’s never forgotten peggy, never forgotten those years when he thought bucky was dead; i think steve roger’s standard romantic advice would be be “put yourself out there because you never know when you’re not going to get another chance, and try not to let your past drag you down.” but obviously THAT WOULD HIT MUCH HARDER FOR DEREK THAN IT WOULD FOR MOST PEOPLE, and i totally think they’d end up bonding about it and like, having a heart to heart or at very least a heart to glare-and-occasional-speech.
