Tags: i have some complicated 4th of july feelings which are pretty much the same as my complicated america feelings which all more or less boil down to: if the amount of time energy and money my country spends worshipping itself were repurposed to BETTERING THE COUNTRY were spent making this nation a better place to live for e v e r y b o d y i would feel a lot more inclined towards patriotic celebrations and dont' get me wrong; i love america there is never going to be a reality where i'm not at my core a cornfed ohio girl but this idea that's out there right now that to love this country means supporting it unilaterally that to love this country you can never question it's past present or future that makes me nervous as an american and as a human being and the idea that we're celebrating our 'independence' by buying into this kind of...feverish and often blind patriotism is one i find awfully hard to swallow /two cents
